Unlike other shooters, Marvel Rivals handles assists differently, making it confusing for many players. If you're trying to complete event challenges or achievements that require assists or simply want to improve your skills as a Strategist or Vanguard, understanding how assists work is important. This guide breaks down exactly how to get assists in Marvel Rivals and which characters perform best for getting assists in the game.
In most shooter games you get an assist by damaging an enemy before your teammate finishes them off. However, Marvel Rivals takes a completely different approach focused on supporting your teammates rather than just dealing damage.
What Counts as an Assist in Marvel Rivals
To earn an assist in Marvel Rivals, you need to directly support an ally who gets an elimination or debuff an enemy. This happens through:
- Healing allies during combat as they secure a kill.
- Providing stat buffs to teammates (damage boosts, movement speed, etc.).
- Applying crowd control effects on enemies (stuns, slows, freezes) before your team follows up.
- Shielding teammates as they eliminate opponents.
- Immobilizing enemies to set up kills for your allies.
When you get an assist, you'll see a notification on your screen showing a hand-holding icon, which is different from the more prominent elimination icon. It's important to understand that simply dealing damage to an enemy without finishing them off does NOT count as an assist in Marvel Rivals. This is where many players get confused, since:
- Dealing damage without getting the final hit counts toward your eliminations, not assists
- You must provide some form of utility or support to your teammates for it to count as an assist
You can check your assist count during a match by opening the scoreboard, which tracks these stats separately from eliminations. We have attached an image below of how the scorecard looks like and which stats denotes the assists:

Best Characters for Getting Assists in Marvel Rivals
Strategist heroes generally excel at getting assists since their kits focus on healing and supporting teammates. However, several characters across all roles can rack up assists quickly if played correctly.
- rocket raccoon: Rocket's healing capabilities make him one of the best assist generators. His Repair Mode projectiles travel slowly and heal over time, plus they can be spammed, giving you plenty of opportunities to heal allies as they secure kills.
- invisible woman: She can both heal and shield allies, providing multiple ways to get assists.
- mantis: Mantis offers healing, damage boosts through Allied Inspiration, and crowd control with Spore Slumber. Her ultimate also provides healing over time and movement speed boosts, making her excellent for assists.
- storm: Despite being a Duelist, Storm is an assist machine because of her Weather Control ability, which provides movement or damage boosts to nearby allies.
- luna snow: She combines healing with crowd control through her Absolute Zero freeze effect, giving her multiple ways to earn assists.
- bruce banner: Hulk can provide Gamma Shields to teammates generating assists when protected allies secure eliminations.
- magneto: Using Metal Bulwark to protect allies as they secure kills will earn you assists.
- captain america: His Freedom Charge ultimate provides bonus health and movement speed boosts that can lead to assist credits when buffed teammates get eliminations.
Getting assists in Marvel Rivals requires a different mindset compared to other shooters. Instead of focusing on dealing damage, concentrate on supporting your teammates through healing, buffs, and crowd control. Strategist heroes naturally excel at this, but many characters across all roles have abilities that can generate assists when used strategically.
