The Human Torch has landed in Marvel Rivals as another flying character, joining the roster alongside other members of the Fantastic Four. Johnny Storm brings fire-based abilities and aerial mobility with a playstyle focused on area denial and burst damage potential. This guide breaks down everything you need to know about playing the Human Torch effectively, from his basic abilities to advanced combos and counters.

Human Torch Overview

Human Torch is a Duelist character which means he primarily functions as a damage dealer. He can create zones that punish enemy positioning while also having the mobility to swoop down for quick eliminations.

How to Play Human Torch?

Human Torch works best as a mid-range duelist who controls areas with flame fields while using his mobility to punish isolated or low-health targets. His low health pool (250) means you need to be careful about your positioning - you can't stay in direct combat for too long.

Positioning & Playstyle

When playing Human Torch, you generally want to stay at mid-range, using your aerial advantage. Create flame fields to control key areas and choke points while using your mobility to avoid direct confrontation with high-damage enemies. Always look for opportunities to dive low-health targets with your burst combo, but make sure you have an escape plan when engaging.

There are two main ways to play Human Torch effectively:

  • Defensive Area Denial: Stay back and create flame walls that separate enemies, making it harder for them to push together. This playstyle focuses on using Blazing Blast to set up flame fields and Pyro Prison to create dangerous zones enemies need to avoid.
  • Aggressive Dive: Use flame fields to weaken opponents, then dive in with your burst combo to secure eliminations. This is riskier but can be very effective when you have good team support.

One thing you really need to understand is his basic attack - think of it like a projectile shotgun. In short range, you will do great damage, but as you move further, you will find it hard to hit your primary fire due to the projectile delay and bullet spread. Given the difficulty of landing hits with his primary fire, it's crucial to position yourself at the optimal range (25-30m) where you can reliably hit your shots while still maintaining safety.

One particular tip that we can give you is to try to stay near cover, such as pillars or walls (just like in the video above) - this will help you survive longer and also give you a chance to dodge characters like Iron Fist or Hulk.

Map Control and Objective Play

Human Torch excels at controlling space around objectives. When attacking, create flame fields that force defenders off the objective, use Plasma Body to quickly reposition around the point, save Flaming Meteor to clear key defensive positions, and place flame fields to cut off reinforcement paths.

For defense, set up flame fields at common entry points, use your aerial advantage to spot flankers, and save your burst combo for priority targets like strategists.

Human Torch Combos

The main combo and quickest burst damage for Human Torch uses two really fast animation cancels in quick succession. Here's how to execute it:

You start with your primary fire (Fire Cluster), and as soon as the primary fire comes out, you animation cancel it with Blazing Blast. As soon as Blazing Blast comes out, you animation cancel with Flaming Meteor to land on top of the enemy and detonate the flame field. This should result in an almost instantaneous elimination if you connect everything properly. After that, if you still haven't eliminated your target, you can follow up with some primary fire attacks which do significant damage since you'll be up in their face. If the situation becomes dangerous, you can quickly escape to safety using Plasma Body.

To execute this combo properly, aim to make your transitions between abilities as seamless as possible. The timing is tight, but with practice, the abilities will flow into each other almost instantly. Get close to your target but still at mid-range, fire your primary exactly once, then immediately use Blazing Blast, followed immediately by Flaming Meteor.

Another effective combo is the "Flame Prison Trap": Place two Blazing Blast flame fields at choke points, wait for enemies to approach, place a third flame field to complete the triangle, then activate Pyro Prison to create an enclosed area.

The Plasma Body ability offers versatility beyond just speed. You can use it to quickly reposition between flame field placements, chase down fleeing enemies, and perform sudden direction changes.

How to Counter Human Torch

To play Human Torch at his maximum potential, you need to understand what makes him vulnerable. Here are the best counters for Human Torch in Marvel Rivals:

  • Snipers & Precision Characters: Black Widow and Hawkeye can pick you off from range. Your slower aerial movement makes you an easy target for skilled players. Be especially careful when your Plasma Body is on cooldown. When facing these characters, use more erratic movement patterns and take advantage of cover more often.
  • High DPS Characters: Punisher and Winter Soldier can melt your low health pool quickly. These characters can unload a steady stream of bullets that you simply can't withstand, forcing you to retreat or die quickly.
  • Iron Fist: He can engage you in aerial combat with strong anti-air capabilities. Can stay airborne and punish you with close-range strikes. The recent buffs to Iron Fist in season 1.5 make him especially dangerous to flying characters. Once an Iron Fist gets close to you in the air, you'll have a hard time escaping his relentless attacks.

Human Torch is a powerful but challenging character that rewards practice and game awareness. His flame abilities can control the battlefield, while his mobility lets him pick off vulnerable targets.

Focus on mastering his animation cancels and quick combos to maximize burst damage, and be mindful of his counters - especially snipers and anti-air specialists. While his learning curve is steep, the payoff is a character who can control space and deliver devastating burst damage when played correctly.
