Thor Guide: How to Play, Combos, & Counters

Thor has undergone some major changes in Marvel Rivals Season 2.5, and if you're struggling to adapt to his new playstyle, you're not alone. The God of Thunder isn't the same as he used to be. This guide covers everything you need to know about the reworked Thor, from his updated abilities to strategies. We'll also cover which heroes work well with Thor and which ones can counter him.

Note: We are still working on this guide as these are our early impressions of Thor after the rework. We will play more and update with more strategies and combos if a new meta develops around him.

What Changed in Thor's Rework

The biggest change to Thor is how his Hammer Throw works. It used to cost Thorforce (those hammer charges you see on screen), but now it actually gives you Thorforce back when you hit enemies. Also, the damage on the Hammer throw has decreased as well!

His survivability took a hit, too. The bonus health you get from consuming Thorforce dropped from 100 to 75 per charge, and the maximum bonus health went down from 200 to 150. This makes Thor squishier than before.

How to Use Your Abilities

  • Thorforce (Passive): You have a maximum of 3 Thorforce charges. Each charge consumed grants 75 Bonus Health (reduced from 100 in Season 2.5), with the Awakening Rune granting 150 Bonus Health when consuming all 3 charges. Managing these charges is key to Thor's kit.
  • Mjölnir Bash (Primary Fire): This is your primary melee attack. In the Awakened state, this turns into lightning arc waves.
  • Hammer Throw (Right Click): The biggest change in Season 2.5. This ability no longer costs Thorforce and instead grants 1 Thorforce when it hits enemies. In the current meta, you should use it to build your Thorforce to enter the Awakened state.
  • Lightning Realm (E): Creates an area that restores Thorforce based on enemies within it.
  • Storm Surge (Shift): Your mobility tool that costs 1 Thorforce. We recommend that you save one charge of Thorforce in case you need to disengage or engage, and also remember, you cannot use it while in the Awakened state.
  • Awakening Rune (F): This ability consumes all 3 Thorforce charges to enter an enhanced state for 5 seconds. This grants bonus health and empowers your primary fire. The catch is that you lose mobility during this state, so positioning before activation is really important.
  • God of Thunder (Ultimate): Use it to control objectives or finish off weakened enemies, but be aware of the long animation time that leaves you vulnerable.

How to Play Thor in Marvel Rivals?

Thor's reworked playstyle requires different positioning than before. In the current meta, it is more suitable to play in Awakening Rune state (we are not saying it is really amazing, but it is better out of the two options). You enter your Awakening Rune state, and after that ends, you use your abilities and primary to build your Thorforce and get into the Awakening state again. This is different from before, where you would Storm Surge into the backline and then use the M1, M2, which helped you deal good damage and sustain in close range. Since the bonus health from Hammer Throw has been removed fighting in melee range for long is not really worth it. However you need to be in a close to mid range, so that you can get your Thorforce up consistently to spam the Awakening state.

A lot of people will think that he can be played with the same brawler playstyle as before, but in higher tiers with good team compositions, you will find it hard to play him like a brawler now. One important thing you need to remember is to wait until the enemy uses their crowd control abilities before you dive in. Since his overall sustain has decreased, you will find yourself in a really tough spot if you choose to dive in recklessly.

The problem with the current Thor, in our opinion, is that the gameplay has been shifted to spamming Awakening Rune state, and a good team can exploit this, as he is quite vulnerable in this state since he doesn't really have access to his mobility option in this state.

  • Awakening Rune → Hammer Throw → Mjolnir Bash/Lightning Realm → Awakening Rune

We are still investigating more viable combos.

How to Counter Thor in Marvel Rivals?

Thor's main weakness is crowd control (slows, stuns, or freezes) and anti-dive characters. These are the characters that counter Thor:

Best Team Composition for Thor

Before patch 2.5, tanks that could dive in with Thor were a good choice to have with Thor, such as Captain America and Venom. Also, Duelists that could finish low health targets engaged with Thor, such as the Punisher, Hela, and Hawkeye, worked well. However, after patch 2.5, we are still investigating the best team compositions. Hela is still a good choice as she has a team-up ability with Thor. Another character that works well with Thor currently is Ultron due to his drone.

Best Thor Crosshair Code in Marvel Rivals

Thor benefits from a crosshair that helps with both his melee primary fire and his enhanced attacks after activating the Awakening Rune. The center dot helps you aim your melee attacks, while the outer circle helps you land your hits when you're in Awakened state:
