How to Play Rogue

Rogue is a very versatile Vanguard, capable of adapting to different situations with ease. However, her primary role is an off-tank, which means playing Rogue does not require constantly protecting teammates. Instead, focus on finding the right moments to strike or defend.

While her skill-stealing ability may seem like her main highlight, her true strength comes from her shield counterattack and reliable combo sequence. To play Rogue effectively, learn and practice the following combo:

  • Start with either Southern Brawl or Chrono Kick Combo.
  • Once airborne, perform one melee attack.
  • If you haven't used Southern Brawl yet, follow up with it after the melee hit.
  • Press E again to perform the dive slam.
  • Finish with basic attacks or hold the enemy down with Ability Absorption.

If more than one enemy is ahead, you can initiate with her dash skill to pull them in, then follow up with her Chrono Kick Combo.

Keep in mind that timing is crucial. Do not blindly dive in and attempt this combo when outnumbered. The ideal moment to execute it is when punishing an overextended enemy or when your teammates are using their Ultimates.

Skill Steal

Of course, Rogue’s iconic mutant power is to steal abilities from anyone she touches. In Marvel Rivals, her skill-stealing mechanic opens up plenty of clutch gameplay opportunities, and its best use depends entirely on the situation.

If your team is struggling against heavy damage, steal shielding or defensive abilities. If your team needs more burst or consistent DPS, steal damaging abilities. Adapt to what your team lacks and use the stolen skill accordingly.

This ability also works as a form of crowd control. Grabbing an enemy who is trying to escape is a great way to stop their movement and give your team the advantage.

Ultimate

Her bread-and-butter skill, and the one that will annoy countless players, is her Ultimate. When activated, Rogue generates an AoE around her that continually drains the Ultimate charge of any enemies caught inside it. This ability is crucial for winning team fights, and even the match when timed correctly.

Use her Ultimate early when contesting or capturing an objective. Doing so forces enemies to scatter and, even better, delays their counter-Ultimates.

A strong way to initiate is by using her Shift ability to dash in and pull enemies inward, then immediately activating her Ultimate. This combo makes it much harder for opponents to escape and maximizes the value of the drain.

Rogue Team-Up Ability

Rogue will be joining the existing “Explosive Entanglement” Team-Up, with Gambit and Magneto. When Rogue activates her Team-Up ability, her basic attacks explode on impact, dealing damage to nearby enemies while also healing nearby allies.

Best Team Composition for Rogue

The best heroes to pair with Rogue are those who can complement her aggressive playstyle. Vanguards like Emma, Groot, Magneto, and Doctor Strange can serve as the primary shielding tanks, an area where Rogue slightly falls short.

Gambit is naturally the best Strategist partner thanks to their Team-Up ability. Other Strategists such as Mantis and Invisible Woman can further enhance Rogue’s damage output while providing crowd control to enable even more aggressive engagements.

Moon Knight and Phoenix also benefit greatly from Rogue’s pulling ability, as their skills are far more effective against tightly clumped enemy groups.

How to Counter Rogue

The best counters to Rogue are tank-busters like Wolverine and Iron Fist, as their high single-target damage can cut through her durability and punish her dives. Flying heroes also perform well against melee-focused characters like Rogue, since they can stay out of her reach and force her to overextend.

Peni Parker can make Rogue’s playstyle significantly harder, as Rogue needs to commit and dive in to deal damage, while Peni can keep her at bay with her mines. Cloak & Dagger can also counter Rogue effectively by making allies vanish during Rogue’s ultimate, reducing the number of hits she can land and lowering her ultimate charge absorption.
