Hero Balance Updates
Competitive Mode Improvement
Season 5 brings major improvements to ranked play based on community feedback.
Placement Match System
Gold rank costume rewards work the same way as before. If you reach Gold and play 10 matches in Season 5.0, you get the rewards with Season 5.5. If you don't make it in the first half, you can still get it by reaching Gold and playing 10 matches in Season 5.5. You'll get both costumes at the end of the season.
Nameplate frames and Crest of Honor rewards are simpler now. These rewards aren't split between the two halves of the season anymore. Season 5 has one set of these rewards that you get after Season 5.5 ends. As long as you hit the rank and play enough matches during the full season, you'll get the rewards. Season 4.5 rewards stay the same and will be given out normally.
Team Queue Size Changes
How many people can queue together depends on the highest ranked player in your group. If everyone is Grandmaster or lower, you can queue with 2, 3, 4, or 6 players. If anyone is Celestial, Eternity, or Top 500, you can only queue with 2 players. If someone in your group hasn't finished placement matches, you can only queue with up to 3 players. When more than one rule applies, the game uses the strictest one. For example, if one player is doing placements and another is Celestial rank, you can only queue as a duo.
Ranked Rewards Changes
Gold rank costume rewards will work the same as before. If you reach Gold and play 10 matches in Season 5.0, you will receive your reward in Season 5.5. If you don't meet the requirement in Season 5.0, you can still earn it by reaching Gold and playing 10 matches in Season 5.5, and you will receive two costumes at the end of the season.
For nameplate frames and Crest of Honor, these rewards will no longer be split between the first and second half of each season. Instead, there will be one set of rewards for the entire Season 5, distributed after Season 5.5 ends. As long as you meet the rank and match requirements, you'll receive the rewards.
The developers hope these changes reduce the pressure of grinding for high ranks and give players more flexibility in planning their climb.
