He is inevitable. When talking about Marvel, Thanos is always one of the first names mentioned due to his massive presence in the comics. What makes it even more exciting is that Thanos might be introduced in Marvel Rivals in the future. Let’s take a look at Thanos in Marvel Rivals, including the leaks, possible abilities, role, and gameplay predictions.
Marvel Rivals Thanos Leaks
NetEase has revealed that 2026 will be a huge year for Marvel Rivals, as the game will launch a year-long event called Path to Doomsday. This event revolves around the storyline of The Infinity Saga.

Running from April through December, the same month that Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to release in theaters worldwide, Marvel Rivals will feature multiple in-game events connected to the MCU storyline. These events will include special game modes centered around major villains from the saga.
This means that when the Avengers: Infinity War themed event begins in August, or when the Avengers: Endgame themed content arrives in October, Thanos will almost certainly be involved. Since the event mode is expected to be a 1v6 PvP format where one player controls the villain, Thanos could become playable during those events.
However, it is still unclear whether he will only appear as a temporary event character or eventually become a permanent playable hero. Many fans are hoping that the Mad Titan remains in the roster after the event ends.
Thanos Abilities and Role Prediction in Marvel Rivals
When looking at a character like Thanos, the most obvious role in Marvel Rivals would be a Vanguard. Thanos would naturally fit a tank role that can absorb heavy damage. However, because he will almost certainly wield the Infinity Gauntlet, he could function more like a sub DPS tank rather than a pure shielding Vanguard.
Infinity Stone

There have been no confirmed leaks regarding his abilities yet. Still, it is reasonable to assume that many of his skills would revolve around the Infinity Stones. Giving him access to all of them immediately would likely be too powerful, so the game might introduce a progression mechanic instead.
One possible system is something similar to Deadpool’s progression mechanics in the game. Thanos might need to defeat enemies to collect or unlock additional Infinity Stones over time. Starting with the Space Stone and Power Stone would make sense, granting him core abilities like short-range teleportation and powerful damaging skills.
Basic Attack and Defense

In the comics, Thanos can project cosmic energy from his eyes and hands. This could translate into his primary attack, perhaps a slow but powerful barrage of energy blasts fired from his hands.
A defensive ability could involve projectile absorption, powered by the Power Stone. Thanos might create a rounded energy barrier in front of him that stops or destroys incoming projectiles.
Ultimate
His Ultimate ability could also depend on how many Infinity Stones he has collected. If he does not yet possess all the Stones, the Ultimate could trigger a large area attack, such as raining meteor-like fragments of a moon or planet onto the battlefield.
However, if he manages to collect all the Stones, the Ultimate could become the iconic Infinity Gauntlet snap, instantly eliminating a random half of the enemy team. After that, the Stone collection progress would reset.
These ideas are still speculative and based largely on comic lore, so they should be taken with a grain of salt.
Marvel Rivals Thanos Gameplay Prediction
It will be interesting to see how NetEase incorporates the many powers and abilities of Thanos into Marvel Rivals. Since the game already features a unique progression style mechanic with Deadpool, it is very possible that Thanos could receive a similar system.

In this case, Thanos’s progression could revolve around collecting the Infinity Stones. This mechanic fits perfectly with his comic storyline, where his main goal is to gather all the Stones and eventually wipe out half of the universe’s population with the Infinity Gauntlet.
One possible gameplay system is that Thanos would complete objectives during a match to collect Stones, perhaps by eliminating each enemy hero once. Each team elimination could grant him one Infinity Stone, up to a total of six.
As he collects more Stones, his overall power could increase, his abilities might evolve, and his Ultimate could eventually transform into the iconic Infinity Gauntlet snap. Once the snap is used, the Stones could disappear, forcing Thanos to start the progression again.
If implemented this way, Thanos would likely play as a very aggressive Vanguard, somewhat similar to Rogue in terms of pressure and frontline presence. Like Deadpool’s progression mechanic, players might prefer to stay on Thanos once they begin building momentum instead of switching characters.

Then again, NetEase might choose a more humorous comic reference and give him something unexpected, such as the infamous Thanos-Copter as his Ultimate ability. Who knows? Nothing is impossible in Marvel Rivals.
When Will Thanos Release in Marvel Rivals?
If the connection with the Path to Doomsday event holds true, Thanos would likely be introduced during the Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers: Endgame themed portions of the event, which are expected to begin around August or October 2026.
Based on the current roadmap timeline, this could place his arrival around Season 9.0 or Season 10.5 in Marvel Rivals.
Season 7, meanwhile, is expected to introduce Black Cat and White Fox, both of whom have already been officially teased through an in-game gallery card and an official post on X.
That is everything known so far about Thanos and how he might work in Marvel Rivals. Are you excited to play as the Mad Titan and unleash his power on the battlefield?
