Lore
"What have you gotten yourself into this time, Logan?" Black Widow whispered as she looked through the scope of her sniper rifle. She had found the perfect vantage point to pick off a squad of Public Eye officers from a safe distance, but while she had removed herself from the heart of the battle, Wolverine had failed to do the same. In fact, his berserker attack had drawn all of the corrupt lawmen toward him.
This wasn't the first time her Adamantium-clawed ally had put himself directly in the line of fire. Since he arrived in the year 2099 alongside the rest of his fellow Mutants, Wolverine had been caught in the crossfire on numerous occasions. And while his healing factor always got him back on his feet, the wounds still hurt. If Black Widow allowed her friend to become collateral damage yet again, she feared he might reconsider his participation in her band of freedom fighters.
Desperate for another solution, Black Widow remembered her recent visit to the planet Klyntar. There, she temporarily became the host to a small fraction of the Phoenix Force. And while she eventually relinquished that primal power, she still felt the slightest tinge of cosmic fire burning within her.As she closed her eyes and concentrated on the Phoenix's eternal flame, the chamber on her rifle began to glow…
Saying a quiet prayer in Russian, she pulled the weapon's trigger, unleashing a flaming bullet that soared directly toward the battlefield. As it reached its destination, it exploded in a dazzling display, instantly eliminating all of the Public Eye officers while leaving Wolverine unscathed. Black Widow watched through her scope as her friend's initial frustration gave way to relief as he realized that the he wasn’t injured by the explosion. In fact, the power of the Phoenix Force had accelerated his recovery!
Black Widow quickly turned as the Phoenix herself descended from the sky behind her.By the look on her face, the Phoenix was caught off guard by the Widow’s use of her power…but she was eager to see how her former host might use her cosmic flame again…
Primal Flame Guide
Primal Flame is one of 2 new Team-Ups introduced in Season 3 of Marvel Rivals. In this Team-Up, Phoenix stands as the anchor, infusing Wolverine with the Phoenix Force. This enhancement upgrades Wolverine’s Feral Leap skill, granting him a fire aura that burns nearby enemies and provides lifesteal.
Wolverine
This new Team-Up ability benefits Wolverine the most. He is currently one of the most terrifying melee heroes in the game, and with this new enhancement, he becomes even more aggressive and harder to kill.
The best way to utilize the Primal Flame ability is to use Feral Leap as you normally would. However, with the added lifesteal, you don’t need to immediately activate his Undying Animal skill. With lifesteal, you can strategically delay using Undying Animal, giving you more time to apply pressure and play aggressively, especially with the added area burn damage.
However, Feral Leap is normally used to target enemy Vanguards and pull them toward your side. With this new Team-Up, it’s best to snatch the Vanguard and leap toward the enemy backline, aiming to hit enemy Strategists as well to fully optimize the potential of his AoE fire damage.
Black Widow
This Team-Up completely changes how you play Black Widow. When activated, her basic attacks turn into fiery bullets that heal allies and deal splash damage to enemies. Yes, Black Widow is a pocket healer now.
With this ability active, Black Widow shifts into a hybrid healer role, focusing more on supporting teammates than eliminating enemies. The healing output is strong, and using the sniper scope provides better accuracy, making it easier to land shots on allies who need healing.
Keep in mind that you cannot deal critical hits while this Team-Up is active. This means your priority should be healing and supporting your team rather than chasing kills.
Best Against
This Team-Up is most effective against Vanguard-heavy teams, as the main damage comes from Wolverine’s Feral Leap, which is one of the best tank-busting skills in the game. When the enemy team has Vanguards receiving constant burst healing from their Strategist, this is when the Team-Up truly shines.
Use Feral Leap to snatch their Vanguard toward the enemy backliners, and try to simultaneously hit their backline with the AoE fire damage.
Best Counters
These heroes are the best counters to Primal Flame:
- Emma Frost can turn into Diamond Form to prevent Wolverine from snatching her and can immediately grapple to counter his engage.
- The Punisher is a long-range burst damage dealer who can quickly escape using his zipline and smoke grenade if dived by Phoenix-infused Wolverine.
- Human Torch, Storm, and Ultron are the most effective at countering this Team-Up, as they are flyers and can stay out of Wolverine’s reach.
- Invisible Woman can push Wolverine away mid-leap, preventing him from landing near her and her teammates.
- Mantis and Luna Snow both have crowd control abilities that can stop Wolverine from advancing.
